Urban House + ADU

Proposal for a house and Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), designed for a 50’ x 100’ lot in NE Portland for a freelance consultant and a graphic designer. The house includes a one-car garage, with convenient bike parking. Living, dining, kitchen and utility room functions are located on the ground floor of the main house, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a shared work studio on the second floor. The upstairs studio and living room are oriented to the street and have generous views to the outside. The ADU contains a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, dining and living spaces, secure bike parking and additional storage space for the primary residence. Both buildings are outfitted with solar panels.

Both buildings have their own outdoor spaces which enable each set of occupants to engage in outdoor activities without intruding on the another. The outdoor spaces are comprised mainly of permeable pavers, with lots of raised planters set in gravel and an apple and pear tree espalier adjacent to the sidewalk.
